New Research Unveils Benefits of WHO Scalp Acupuncture for Aphasia Patients
Brief on the study
In a groundbreaking study, Li et al. (2024) have revealed promising findings on electricity on WHO Scalp Acupuncture (WSA) points DU20, MS6, MS7 for aphasia patients following head injuries. This research investigates the clinical efficacy of combining scalp electroacupuncture with rehabilitation training, focusing on its impact on patients’ language abilities and overall quality of life.
The study included 100 aphasia patients from our hospital, treated between March 2020 and March 2022. These patients were randomly assigned to two groups: a control group receiving standard rehabilitation training, and an experimental group receiving both scalp electroacupuncture and rehabilitation training.
Results showed that patients in the experimental group i.e. electroacupuncture on scalp points exhibited significantly better outcomes. They had higher scores in the mini-mental state examination, daily communication activities, etc. Additionally, their quality of life scores were higher, and they demonstrated greater treatment effectiveness and satisfaction. Furthermore, these patients had lower scores on the mental status scale in nonpsychiatric settings and the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, with fewer adverse reactions.
Overall, this combination therapy notably improved language function and quality of life for aphasia patients after head injury, suggesting a remarkable enhancement in treatment efficacy. These findings highlight the potential of integrating scalp acupuncture and electroacupuncture with rehabilitation training in clinical settings for better patient outcomes.
