Bamai—Eight Channels: a novel theoretic frame integrating the eight trigrams, eight extraordinary meridians, Ying, Wei, and Six Qi

In the groundbreaking study recently published by Dr. Hui Zhang, President of the European University of Chinese Medicine (EUCM), a novel exploration of the eight extraordinary channels (Qi Jing Ba Mai) and their intricate connections to the eight trigrams (Bagua), Ying-nutrition Qi, Wei-defense Qi, and the Six Qi is unveiled. This work delves into the Qi Jing Ba Mai—the system of the eight extraordinary meridians—which stands distinctly apart from the traditional twelve-meridian system, highlighting its unique circulatory network that is far from being autonomous. The integration of Bagua, or the Eight Trigrams, an essential theoretical framework in Chinese philosophy, plays a pivotal role in both the foundational principles and clinical practices of TCM.
Dr. Zhang’s article sheds light on the often overlooked complexity of acupuncture practice, where, despite the frequent use of points on the Du and Ren meridians, the other six extraordinary meridians and their associated points remain underutilized. By introducing Bamai, an innovative pairing of the eight trigrams with the eight extraordinary meridians, alongside an integration of Six Qi, Ying-nutritive Qi, and Wei-defensive Qi, the study pioneers a new perspective on the eight channels. This novel approach, rooted in historical practices and a logical connection between the meridians’ fundamental actions and indications, offers a comprehensive theoretical framework. Dr. Zhang’s work aims to enhance the clinical application of the eight extraordinary channels, proposing the Bamai system as a vital theoretical tool for practitioners. This study not only bridges traditional knowledge with contemporary practice but also paves the way for future explorations in the field of TCM.
